WESTERN SPIRIT RANCH
NEWSLETTER |

FEBRUARY 2008 |

A
bitter cold and snowy winter continues at Western Spirit
Ranch.
We sold two 2004 Southdown ewe sisters to a couple of young
sisters who have graced our ranch with their enthusiasm and
captured our hearts. Cady and McKenzie recently moved to
Colorado, are in high school and are jumping right into the
raising Southdown sheep. We are looking forward to being
part of their animal husbandry team!
As any local 4H or FFA young person will learn when you
purchase a lamb or pig from us, we will take extra time to
get you going in the right direction and provide whatever
knowledge we have to make your project a success. That
comes, as my good friend, Jay from Louisiana says: “at no
extra charge”!!
Our pig consultant, Bill Fisher is getting ready for our
visit with him in March – April back in Illinois. We are
excited about all of the Berkshire breeding prospects; feed
ration formulas and facilities equipment we will be picking
up during our stay. We are also picking up a good number of
young feeders for this fall’s harvest. We already have pork
orders coming in from folks in Colorado for our fall
selections, so don’t forget to think about ordering the
“best of the best”: Colorado, humanely, ranch-raised 100%
Pure Berkshire pork, full of “Open-Range Goodness
TM” for
your special dinner or gathering.
The first of February, the American Human Society
distributed a very disturbing hidden video which was taken
at a facility which processed beef cattle in
heavily-regulated California. We considered linking it to
our website, but were so disgusted by it, that we elected
not to. If there was ever a reason to take up action for
humane treatment of livestock, this video is it. The men
treating those helpless, sick and injured livestock in the
manner they were captured on film, should be found guilty
and deported or bound over for hard prison time.
Spring, whether we believe it or not, is just around the
corner. We cannot wait for those annual spring events like
shearing day, lambing, BBQ-ing and getting out for a good
trail ride. There will be plenty to do at the Bijou Creek
Ranch Unit, but preparing to sell our Parker Ranch Unit will
also draw our attention. The Parker Unit was tucked in for
winter, but there remains some painting to do here and
there, along with grading the main access road after all the
snow and run-off is finished. Having the opportunity to do
all of that under those bright, warm, blue-sky Colorado
spring days will remind us that living in Colorado is
terrific!
Give us a shout if you are interested in humanely-raised,
family-ranch livestock or meat products produced in
beautiful Colorado. Meanwhile, thank you for stopping by our
website. Enjoy your stay.
